Earl L. ‘Buddy’ Duckworth

MACON — Earl L. “Buddy” Duckworth of Macon died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at the Macon Health Care Center. He was 84.
Mr. Duckworth was born on Feb. 1, 1924, to J.W. and Ida Mae Hill Duckworth.
He graduated from Macon High School in 1942 before entering the Army and serving with the 3rd Infantry Division. Mr. Duckworth fought in North Africa and Europe, including the Anzio Invasion. He was taken prisoner in 1944 by the German military in southern France and remained there until the end of the war in 1945.
Mr. Duckworth was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Ex-Prisoners of War and several other veterans organizations.
Mr. Duckworth married Doris Jean Thieman on Dec. 31, 1949.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Jan Wiley of Paris, Mo., and Susan McQuilkin of Columbia; one son, Major Neal Duckworth, U.S. Marines, of Vienna, Va.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one cousin, Sonny Duckworth of Kahoka; and a niece and a nephew.
His parents; two brothers, James and Raymond Duckworth; four sisters, Melba Drayer, Verna Neuneker, Pearl Tallent and Dorothy Williams, died earlier.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home at 401 N. Rollins St. in Macon. Services, led by the Rev. Bernie Toll, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
